What is the purpose of wheel chocks?

To prevent unintended movement of the aircraft when stationary.

To assist in engine starting.

To aid in parking at the gate.

Wheel chocks have one job on the ground: keep the aircraft from rolling while it’s stationary. They’re placed against the wheels to block any movement caused by gravity on a slope, wind gusts, or minor ground forces, so the airplane stays exactly where it’s parked or awaiting pushback. This safety measure is used whenever the aircraft isn’t moving, including at the gate during parking or servicing. They aren’t for starting engines, nor do they reduce aerodynamic disturbances around the aircraft. So, the primary purpose is to prevent unintended movement when the aircraft is not in motion.

To reduce turbulence.
